Inclusion empowers others to thrive

Hello!

Disability Pride Month is celebrated each July to both commemorate the anniversary of the American Disabilities Act and to honor the history, contributions, and experiences of the disability community. For those of us not living with physical disabilities, it can be easy to lose sight of the people in our own lives who need extra support to accomplish some of the everyday tasks that we complete without even thinking. For example, I was recently in a crowded elevator lobby when I realized I could avoid the masses by using the stairs. Until that moment, I’d forgotten what a privilege it is to have that option when so many others are limited in their access.

As you go about your day-to-day routine, or enjoy that summer vacation, take time to think about those with limits to their mobility. Be considerate and willing to offer help if you are able to do so. People with intellectual and developmental disabilities want to experience life the same ways that we do, but often they are blocked by segregation and discrimination, even more so than by their own physical limitations. The Arc’s Story Hub is a great place to hear stories from this diverse community, as well as learn how you can support greater inclusion for those living with disabilities.

Resources

How can we make our communities more inclusive for those with ambulatory or other physical disabilities? As always, communication is the integral first step. After all, we can’t help to mitigate obstacles without first understanding what they are. For greater inclusion, we have to be willing to ask questions and have the (sometimes awkward and uncomfortable) conversations that make us more aware of the world around us.

That’s why we developed our 100k Conversations Challenge. We know that, for many of us, starting these conversations lies outside of our comfort zone. When you commit to the 100k Conversations Challenge, we provide you with tools, encouragement, and resources to help you initiate these and other important DEI discussions with your friends, neighbors, and coworkers. Take that bold first step to being part of progress and join the challenge today!

Lead with Inclusion: Inclusive Actions at Work with Stacey Gordon

A few things employees with disabilities wish their employers knew

We still have a ways to go in improving the employee experience for folks with disabilities. Odds are that you likely have many individuals working within your organizations who currently have a disability. You may not even know about some of these individuals, however, because you’ve either never asked, your accommodation process is terrible, or your employees are fearful that disclosing their disabilities will result in their being singled out, demoted, passed over for advancement, or even pushed out the door. To truly combat ableism, here are some inclusive actions to consider implementing in your workplace.ources to help you have these and other impactful conversations at work!
