Busy doesn’t mean productive (or effective)

Hello!

How many times have you asked someone how they’re doing and their response included some variation of “busy”? How many times has that been your response?

It makes sense – these are tumultuous times. Hurricanes are destroying people’s homes and turning lives upside-down. A heated and divisive election is a mere few weeks away. People looking for work can’t find it, and (ironically) those who are hiring can’t find candidates. Of course, these are all high-level situations that don’t even speak to the multitudes you’re trying to balance in your own work and life situations. With all of these mental and physical demands, it makes sense that “busy” has become a default response.

Being busy isn’t bad in and of itself (although rest and self-care are HUGELY important), but are we busy with the right things? Will the things consuming our time help us progress in 2025, or are we just spinning our wheels?

The end of the year often feeds the frenzy, but what can you do to gain some perspective and take stock of all those moving pieces? What is moving you towards your goals and what is dead weight? In the workplace, what time and effort is empowering your team, and what is pulling it apart?

As we mentioned last time, October is full of observances (check out our Inclusion Calendar for more details), which are designed to raise awareness and, ultimately, urge action. What are you doing now to identify and reduce obstacles for the underrepresented people on your team? What busyness are you taking on to transform your 2024 team into a 2025 community? If you’re not sure where to start, use your time wisely! Let’s talk about developing effective, practical efforts that will get your organization on the right track.

Just last week, a connection on LinkedIn was looking for help with networking toward a new position, and Stacey was able to connect her with an HR executive at the company she’d applied to, raising her visibility to the recruiting team. Are there ways we can help you reach your goals?

Lead with Inclusion: Inclusive Actions at Work with Stacey Gordon

While heritage observances are a useful tool in starting conversations and fostering our own awareness, they weren’t established as a DEI box to be checked at the end of the month. They also weren’t created to make people feel bad, but to provide historical context that allows us to move forward towards greater understanding and inclusion.

At Rework Work, we help our clients ensure their intentions match their impact. But in order to have a positive impact, you first have to have an underlying belief that DEI matters, that equity is something everyone is entitled to, and a baseline acceptance that history happened, though it doesn’t have to repeat itself.

DEI is applicable across diverse industries and municipalities. Stacey recently spoke to students at Loyola Marymount University about DEI in HR. Over the next couple of weeks, she’ll be speaking to employees of a state hospital system, attorneys and staff at a national law firm, and employees of a global engineering company.

All that to say, regardless of the specifics your organization is facing, we can help. Let’s chat about how Stacey can speak to your team’s unique needs.
